Caring For Your Tree’s Roots

Trees, like any plant, require healthy roots to live and thrive. The roots play a vital role in the overall health and stability of any tree on your property. It is important to ensure that these roots are well cared for, so that your trees can continue to grow and flourish for years to come. What do tree roots do? What can you do to make sure they are getting what they need? Hentges Tree Service has the answers for you!

Tree root basics:

1

Your tree’s roots absorb water and nutrients from the soil.

1

Roots help to anchor your trees into the ground to prevent them from leaning or blowing over in harsh winds.

1

Most tree’s roots are less than one foot below the ground and extend much farther than the tree’s canopy to allow for maximum water and nutrient absorption.

1

Cutting or damaging tree roots can cause extreme stress to the tree and leave it vulnerable to attack by disease or pests.

How you can help keep your tree’s roots strong and healthy:

3

Make sure to provide them plenty of water during dry periods.

3

Allow the soil to dry for several days between watering. This allows oxygen to make its way through the soil and into the roots. Avoid compacting the soil under a tree, as that can starve the roots of oxygen. Oxygen is essential for root health.

3

Spread high-quality mulch underneath your tree to provide extra moisture and nutrients, as well as protecting them from damage.

3

Avoid planting flowers or ground covers around your tree’s base. Digging and extra watering for these plants can damage the roots of your tree.

3

If you must dig near a tree, it is less stressful to do so during late fall or winter.

3

Make sure to allow plenty of room for future root systems whenever you plant new trees.
